The Girl Next Door (2007)

5/10
Where the fuck do you start with a film like this? To say it's one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen would be quite the understatement; and I've seen all the big hitting 'sick' ones. For some reason, this resonated with me the most. It's certainly taboo, loosely based on actual events surrounding Gertrude Baniszewski. In the film two girls who have lost their parents in a car accident are taken into the home. The elder girl and a neighbouring boy get on really well after an initial encounter only for him to be drawn into the mishandling of the girls by this deranged loon carer who provokes and sermonises her sons about the infestation that are females.

It's always really difficult to rate a film of this ilk. You cannot 'enjoy' it in that sense because of the source material. But the film certainly does what it sets out to do and that's depict, albeit rather loosely, what happened to these girls at the hands of Baniszewski. It is bold and daring, I'll give it that. Would I watch it again? Probably not. But can I appreciate it for what it was? Yes I think so, so to rubbish it would be folly.
