This is going to an interesting term and year for teachers. The coalition will not stand for coasting schools and teachers any longer.At this point, put your hand up if you consider yourself coasting. If you coasted into school today and took no notice of the words coming out of people who were trying hard to define Good to Outstanding;put up your hands. If your first thought was where do I get a coffee?; put up your hands.If you found yourself yawning and thinking of how you're going to get through the week; put up your hands.
I can see you.Teaching has already forgiven you.
By the end of the week, you will have accumulated a series of setbacks;minor victories,breakthroughs and frustrations.You are teachers and that is the way it goes.Politicians coast...teachers will teach and die trying.
This term, stay Good teachers and keep Michael out of the classroom:*
1) Make no attempt to engage with the Ebacc. Teach what is in front of you and make the marginal gains that will lead to success for your students.
2) Take control of your own CPD.Insist on proper appraisal that will help you develop as an individual. Go on the course;attend the teachmeet;read the book. You are qualified and want to stay up to date.
3) Insist on being line managed properly.Learning walks should be justified; observations clarified. Because you are the owner of the learning which takes place in your room.
4) Don't fear Ofsted.They are a mechanism to check National standards and your school should not be run on the premise of a visit every two years.
5) Education secretaries will come and go.You have more influence on your school than politicians who would not last 5 minutes with Year 9 on Wednesday afternoon.
6) Take control of the curriculum.In the absence of a National curriculum and the freedoms Michael has bestowed; turn those freedoms against the politicians. All schools decide what is in the best interests of their students and what should be taught.
7) Collaborate with the schools around you. Michael believes that competition and choice will drive up standards. We all know it is expertise,cooperation and what happens in the classroom that will transform education.
8) It took most of you four years to become a qualified teacher. Argue that teachers should be qualified and it is not something that can thrown away.The best graduate is not necessarily the best candidate for a life in the classroom.
9) Talk up teaching in front of the students. Let them know the gravity of the task and how committed you are. They will respond to honesty.
10) Be proud of being a school teacher. Let everyone you know that what you do is difficult but rewarding. Tell them at the school gates; the supermarket; the church and the pub.Do not grab strangers in the street...I've tried this and it does not raise the profile of the profession.
